John Christopher,Esq., President

John Christopher is a Registered Patent Attorney with an AV (Preeminent) peer rating by Martindale-Hubbell. His practice encompasses all aspects of patent, trademark, and copyright portfolio development, management, exploitation and enforcement, as well as business transactions related to intellectual property. He works with publicly traded and privately held companies (domestic and international), start-up and early stage companies, individuals, universities, and investors in a broad range of industries, including medical and dental devices, aerospace and automotive hardware, marine hardware, refrigeration equipment, computer hardware, industrial machinery, electro-mechanical instrumentation, consumer goods, dietary supplements, and sports equipment. 

Luis Duco, Administrative Director

Luis has a background in business development for technology startups and venture capital firms.  At Citrix, Luis provids supply market intelligence and financial analysis for their strategic sourcing and category management teams. In a former life, Luis was a professional tennis player, and currently likes to compete in a triathlons. Luis majored in Business Administration and Finance at the University of Central Florida, and gained his MBA from Nova Southeastern University in 2011.  He is also a certified Six Sigma Black Belt.

David Bates is a Shareholder of Gunster, Yoakley & Stewart, P.A.  Gunster, Yoakley & Stewart, P.A. is one of Florida’s oldest and largest full service law firms.  David has been at Gunster, Yoakley & Stewart, P.A. since graduating from Tulane University with his JD/MBA in 1991.


David is Co-Chairman of the Firm’s Technology & Entrepreneurial Companies Practice Group and serves on the Firm’s Governing Board.  He regularly counsels clients in the areas of Technology Law, Venture Capital, Licensing & Distribution, Mergers & Acquisitions and Corporate Finance & Securities. 

Kilburn Sherman, Treasurer

Kilburn has a genuine love for business and currently works for SJO Worldwide where he manages the fund’s strategy for investing in early stage companies. He also works for Maclendon Wealth Manageemnt where he assists in managing the financial complexities exclusively for entrepreneurs. Prior to his current roes, lhe worked for a mid-market public accounting firm where he gained experience in both tax and audit. Kilburn earned a B.S. and M.S. in accounting, both at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Throughout his career, Kilburn has started multiple businesses, ranging from website design and consulting to an organic mushroom farm. Along with the GCVCA Kilburn is also the Chair of the Young Professional Association of Delray, a member of the Global Shapers (an initiative of the World Economic Forum), and on the finance committee for the Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce.

Barry Shapiro

Barry Shapiro has more than forty years of experience in accounting and auditing and has served as Vice President of the New Jersey Society of CPA’s Mr. Shapiro was a partner with Mann Judd Landau (MJL) an international accounting firm until 1989 when MJL merged. From 1990 through February 2007 he was an audit partner with Millward & Co., an accounting and auditing firm in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In 1998, American Express Tax & Business Services (TBS) acquired the tax and consulting practices of Millward & Co. and from 1998 to September 2005 he was a managing director of TBS He had been an audit partner since February 2007 with McGladrey, a licensed CPA firm that provides assurance services and since September 2005 as a managing director with RSM McGladrey, a professional services firm providing tax and consulting services. In July 2009, Mr. Shapiro retired as a partner with McGladrey and as a managing director with RSM McGladrey Since retiring he has been on the Board of several companies and is presently on the Board of Roadside Transportation LLC.
